As soon as the news from Israel spread worldwide of a surprise terrorist attack by Hamas military groups, many American leaders rejected the incursions of invading forces into the territory of Israel. One of the earliest reactions was of the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, in a brief but forceful statement:
“I am deeply shocked and heartbroken at the news of attacks on Israeli civilians and the senseless acts of violence by Hamas terrorists, as Israel celebrated a Jewish holiday. These heinous acts of violence must end to protect innocent lives. Miami-Dade stands with the people of Israel and their right to defend themselves against acts of terror today, tomorrow, and always.”
50 -year anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur War
Appearing on national TV, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced, “We are at war.”
“Not an ‘operation,’ not a ‘round,’ but at war,” he emphasized.
Netanyahu vowed that “the enemy will pay an unprecedented price.”
Israel has reportedly retaliated against Gazan cities, killing at least one Palestinian.
“A militant group in Gaza, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, announced Israeli soldiers were being held captive as the Israeli Defense Forces refused to comment on unverified videos circulating of hostages allegedly being taken by Hamas,” the Washington Post reported.
The attack occurred one day after the 50-year anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, which is one of the holiest days in Judaism.
